When most of us need a vehicle, we don't really care which car rental company we use. We want a reliable car, a well-known company and the car available on the day we need it.

The major car rental companies, Budget Rent a Car, Thrifty Car Rental, Avis Rent A Car, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, and Hertz car rental, all claim to offer a quality experience. They all say that they can give you the best car rental cost and/or deal available.

So, is there really a difference in which car rental company you use?

Budget car rental's web portal says their company delivers the friendly service and great value that makes theirs the best. The internet opinion sites don't feel the same.

The old caveat apparently still holds true:"Every satisfied vendee tells five others; every unsatisfied tells nine." The major companies, across the boards, all currency in on negative reviews.

Thrifty car rental follows suit. Their website wants you to anticipate a match to any other car rental company's rates, with an extra 10 percent off your rental car rate if you find a better deal elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the big five may match your rates at reservation time but not when it comes time to pick up the car. This may be due to the "unavailability" of the car you reserved months ago or undisclosed company and local government fees. Some consumers feel it is due to plain old bait and switch. After all, not many of us can be stranded at the airport in a city far from home and call that okay.

Avis car rental's motto, "We try harder," still promises a stress-free car rental experience through excellent customer service. Their check in and out is supposed to be legendary. And you still see some good reviews on that, but not much else.

Hertz, as well as Enterprise Rent-a-Car, not surprisingly also claim to be the best. They both claim market leadership in the car rental industry.

Market leadership today means, apparently, most profit. Business trips, insurance and vacation rentals make up the majority of the car rentals. Two out of three completely require some kind of car rental. Profit is there to be made when providing a required service.

You have to question whether that profitability makes them service friendly or accountable to anyone. It brings to mind the Enron scandal. Such a lovely company; it made such large profits and spent cash so lavishly. And destroyed so many financially.

In the major cities and airports in the Married States and abroad, expect the car rental companies to offer akin cars, but not necessarily the one you reserved.

In the end, the car rental companies are pretty much alike. You may choose one over the other if they have a "frequent car rental" program available.

Renting locally, you may even develop a relationship with a specific location. Think about whether you'll consistently use the same company often enough to obtain some sort of upgrade or special deal.

If they made good on their claims to offer great customer service, you'd know you'd never be stranded when you're in one of their cars. But don't await it. Treat it like your own car and be prepared for crises.
